He Sun

Pre-College, Wind Ensemble

Sun He is currently the wind ensemble conductor at The Tianjin Juilliard School’s Pre-College, and he is also the executive director of the New Zealand International Brass Festival.

Sun frequently appears as a soloist and he performed solo recitals in Oklahoma City, Chicago, Beijing, Nanchang, Lanzhou, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and other cities. He toured Asia with the Lakefront Brass Quartet in 2012. In 2017, he was invited to play a three-month tour with a musical group from London West End for “Wicked.” He has performed with orchestras including Pennsylvania Philharmonic, Symphony in C, Chicago Composer’s Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony, Shanghai Philharmonic, Orchestra, China National Symphony, Blue Note Jazz Big Band, and more.

As a conductor, Sun collaborated with Temple University Symphony Orchestra, New Zealand International Brass Festival Faculty Ensemble, and the Chicago College of Performing Arts Brass Ensemble. He held the position as assistant conductor at Temple University Composer’s Orchestra from 2013 to 2014, and later became the associate director of this orchestra from 2014 to 2016.

Sun also served as a faculty member at the first annual Wrobleski Low Brass Camp. Currently, he is the executive director at New Zealand International Brass Festival and the New Zealand International Brass Competition. He is also a teaching artist at Music Academy International (Trentino Music Festival) and a member of the Festival Orchestra in Italy every summer. He has presented lectures at University of British Columbia, University of Toronto, The Tianjin Juilliard School, University of North Georgia, International Euphonium and Tuba Festival (I.E.T.), T-Bone School Japan, and Singapore International Brass Festival.

He has composed and arranged music for symphony orchestras, chamber music, and films. His composition works are performed by Chicago College of Performing Arts Brass Ensemble, Guangzhou Symphony Brass Quintet, Tianjin Juilliard Pre-College Wind Ensemble, SEPTA Trombone Quartet, musicians from Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, and Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra. In the 2022-23 season, his chamber works will be premiered by musicians from the Philadelphia Orchestra, and Boston Brass. His film scores are featured in movies “The Sniper”(2021), “Black Fox”(2022), and “The Urban Legend of Long Hu Mountain”(2022).

Born in China, Sun was a engineering major at the University of Science and Technology in Beijing. In 2009, he started his music studies at Oklahoma City University. Later, he earned his B.M. degree at Roosevelt University Chicago College of Performing Arts; and a M.M. degree from Temple University in Philadelphia. He studied trombone performance with Jay Friedman, Charlie Vernon, Reed Capshaw, Blair Bollinger, Matthew Vaughn, and Nitzan Haroz. His conducting teachers include Maestro Luis Biava, Stephen Squires, David Hayes, and Andrea Delfs.
