Pianist and improviser Junhui Chen has captivated audiences worldwide as a soloist and collaborated with orchestras across the world, including the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra, the Rapides Symphony Orchestra, Les Virtuoses Chamber Orchestra, the Ashdod Symphony Orchestra, the China National Symphony Orchestra, the Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Xiamen Symphony Orchestra, the Wuhan Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Shanghai Music Middle School Youth Symphony Orchestra. He has performed at renowned music festivals such as the International Music Festival of Paris, the Perugia Music Festival, the Orford Music Academy, the Fontainebleau School, and the Shanghai Piano Festival.
As a winner of numerous international competitions, Chen has received a host of prizes, including the special prize at the Sicily International Piano Competition in Italy, the second prize at the Amadeus International Piano Competition in Italy, third Prize and Audience Prize at the Thymis International Piano Competition in Greece, Deuxième Prix at the Ravel Music Competition in France, second prize at the 3rd Marbella International Music Competition in Spain, the Bach special prize at the inaugural Olga Kern International Piano Competition, second prize, the Best Masterclass Performance Award and a four-year full scholarship granted by the Eastman School of Music at the Eastman Young Artist International Piano Competition. He also won second prize in the Adult Division of the Louisiana International Piano Competition, where he was the youngest participant.
Chen has given performances at prestigious venues including the National Center for the Performing Arts and the Poly Theatre in Beijing, the Shanghai Concert Hall and Shanghai Symphony Hall, Kodak Hall in Rochester, New York, the Warsaw Philharmonic Concert Hall in Poland, the Château de Fontainebleau and Salle Cortot in Paris, and the Vietnam National Academy of Music Concert Hall in Hanoi.
Born in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, Chen graduated from the Middle School Affiliated to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Zhengxiao Que and Zhe Tang. He holds an Artist Diploma from the École Normale de Musique de Paris, awarded with Très Bien et les Félicitations du Jury, a master's degree from the Juilliard School, a bachelor's degree and an Improvisation Certificate from the Curtis Institute of Music. He has studied under esteemed mentors such as Robert McDonald, Gary Graffman, Dang Thai Son, Jerome Lowenthal, Pascal Rogé, and improvisation mentor Noam Sivan. He is currently teaching Improvisation electives for Graduates at The Tianjin Juilliard School.
In 2026, Chen joined the faculty of Tianjin Juilliard’s Public Education Music Development Program.
