Summer Sounds

Submitted by Yu.Ma@tianjinj… on

This summer, The Tianjin Juilliard School proudly presents the fourth edition of Summer Sounds, our signature annual festival celebrating the transformative power of music and the performing arts. In July and August, our campus comes alive with an exciting season of performances, festivals, residencies, and educational programs, bringing together artists, students, and audiences from around the world. This year’s highlights include the Tianjin Juilliard Vocal Institute, the Tianjin Juilliard Summer Camp, the Asian Youth Orchestra Residency, and the Tianjin Juilliard Piano Festival — offering inspiring opportunities for performance, learning, and artistic exchange.

Explore the festival line-up below and join us in celebrating a vibrant summer of music, creativity, and discovery!

This eight-day summer session—designed for singers, collaborative pianists, and auditors—will go beyond vocal instruction to offer true immersion in opera production. This summer’s faculty features renowned soprano Jeanne-Michèle Charbonnet and opera coach Carmen Santoro, together with stage director Shih-Hsien Chen, who will lead participants in a piano-accompanied staging of Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Selected singers will take part in rehearsals and performances of an abridged version of the opera.

The Tianjin Juilliard Vocal Institute is dedicated to building a unique ecosystem that serves practitioners and students of the vocal arts in China, leveraging our state-of-the-art facilities and world-class artistic resources.

This year’s summer camp will once again bring together Tianjin Juilliard faculty members and internationally renowned artists to create a “summer music school” experience, which combines professional training with inspiring collaborative artistry, for students ages 6 to 18. The five-week camp focuses on different instruments and musical themes, including violin, cello, harp, voice, horn, piano, clarinet, and trumpet.

The Asian Youth Orchestra launches its 2026 Asian Concert Tour with a special opening performance on August 2, 7pm at Tianjin Juilliard.

Following three weeks of intensive rehearsals and artistic collaboration on campus, these exceptional young musicians from across Asia come together for an evening of passion, energy, and extraordinary musical achievement. Under the baton of acclaimed guest conductor John Axelrod, the orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s vibrant Capriccio Italien, Prokofiev’s dazzling Piano Concerto No. 3 featuring Stephan Xie, winner of the 2025 Tianjin Juilliard Piano Festival concerto competition, and Shostakovich’s powerful Symphony No. 5.

The Tianjin Juilliard Piano Festival offers two weeks of rich and vibrant programs featuring a stellar line-up of artists and provides participants with invaluable experience working alongside internationally renowned pianists and teachers through master classes, lectures, private lessons, and performances. The festival provides the unique experience of working with a chamber orchestra and conductor, as well as reading chamber music with renowned chamber musicians.
