The Instrumental and Orchestral Studies program trains musicians at the highest level for careers as members of symphony orchestras and other large performing ensembles. It is one of the most comprehensive and selective programs of its kind in Asia. This major is open to flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, bass trombone, tuba, percussion, harp, violin, viola, cello, and double bass players. 

Major study revolves around participation in the Tianjin Juilliard Orchestra and through private lessons and coachings from an international roster of faculty-in-residence who will play side-by-side on occasion with their students in orchestra. Students will also be coached by Juilliard New York faculty members and other visiting artist-teachers. There is ample opportunity to participate in mock as well as real-world auditions. In addition, the Tianjin Juilliard orchestral studies program is designed to develop students’ extra-musical skills. Students learn to interact with audiences, gain an understanding of orchestral governance, as well as develop skills in audience and community engagement.

Tianjin Juilliard’s relationships with major performance organizations worldwide will provide students with professional experience in orchestras. Coursework explores the performance practices and traditions of orchestral repertoire. As a student, you hone your skills through participation in 
 

• regular orchestral readings, rehearsals, and performances of the Tianjin Juilliard Orchestra led by Tianjin Juilliard's resident conductor and renowned guest conductors 
• weekly orchestral repertoire classes  
• mock auditions   
• workshops on audition preparation

• chamber music performances 

Existing brass and woodwind quintets may apply for the Tianjin Juilliard Orchestral Studies Fellowship Program. One fellowship ensemble will enroll every year in the Master of Music degree program, majoring in Instrumental and Orchestral Studies, and will receive additional coaching and opportunities in chamber music. As a member of the Tianjin Juilliard Fellowship Brass or Woodwind Quintet, you will receive comprehensive scholarship support including:

• Full-tuition scholarship   
• On-campus housing for two years  
• A ¥15,000 professional development grant for each member annually

The Tianjin Juilliard School is a landmark branch campus of The Juilliard School located in Tianjin, China.

2. When was The Tianjin Juilliard School established?
The School launched its Pre-College division in the fall of 2019. The Tianjin Juilliard Graduate division opened in the fall of 2020, coinciding with the official opening of the new campus building. 

3. Why did The Juilliard School choose to launch its branch campus in Tianjin?

4. What programs are offered at The Tianjin Juilliard School? 
The Tianjin Juilliard School has a Graduate Studies division offering an U.S.- accredited Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School in three majors: instrumental and orchestral studies, instrumental and chamber music studies, and collaborative piano. There is a dual-degree program offered to Master of Music students in collaboration with the Tianjin Conservatory of Music.  

The Pre-College division offers a comprehensive, conservatory-style music program on Saturdays for students ages 8 to 18 who exhibit the talent, potential, and ambition to pursue advanced study in China and abroad. 

Tianjin Juilliard's Public Education division is the bridge connecting the world-class musical education of The Juilliard School to the Chinese public through a variety of programs for music learners of all ages and levels. On Sundays, the Music Development Program offers instrumental lessons, chorus, and music literacy courses. Music Development Program students get to perform regularly throughout the year and many of these performances are open to the public. Public Education also offers music-themed summer and winter camps. 

Continuing Education division offers a wide range of programs for professional musicians and teachers, including professional development workshops, such as teacher training courses and resources to support their career development. 

5. Who can apply for the dual-degree program?
Master of Music students enrolled in year 1 and year 2 at the Tianjin Conservatory of Music are eligible to apply to the dual-degree Program. This unique opportunity consists of study at Tianjin Conservatory and two years of study at Tianjin Juilliard. Students who successfully complete the program earn a master's degree from The Juilliard School in New York and the Tianjin Conservatory of Music. Learn more about the dual-degree program here. 

6. Who teaches at The Tianjin Juilliard School?
The Tianjin Juilliard School’s resident faculty is made up of esteemed teachers and performers from around the world. World-renowned conductors are invited to lead intensive rehearsals and orchestral concerts. Visiting faculty from the New York campus come to Tianjin to teach master classes, and to engage in recurring residencies and longer-term projects. Students also have opportunities to study with guest artists from peer institutions.

7. Will there be student exchange programs between the two schools?
Although faculty and visiting artists will travel between the New York and Tianjin campuses, there will not be any formal student exchange programs at this time. However, there are project-based performance exchanges between the two campuses.

8. What performances are offered by The Tianjin Juilliard School? 
The School offers public performances on campus and tickets to these performances are available to the public for free or at a very low cost. The public can attend concerts performed by the Tianjin Juilliard Ensemble, the Tianjin Juilliard Orchestra,  Chamber Music Ensembles, and more. The Tianjin Juilliard Ensemble is a mixed-instrument ensemble composed of distinguished Tianjin Juilliard resident faculty members. There are over 200 performances presented annually in the 687-seat concert hall, 295-seat recital hall, and 221-seat Tanoto Theater. The Tianjin Conservatory of Music is the educational partner of The Tianjin Juilliard School.

10. Will The Tianjin Juilliard School have dance and drama programs in the future?
There are no plans to expand into dance and drama at this time. However, this may be reassessed in the future.

13. Is The Tianjin Juilliard School a full-time school? 
The Master of Music degree program is a two-year, full-time accredited graduate program. The Pre-College, Public Education, and Continuing Education programs are part-time, non-degree-granting programs.

14.   Will The Tianjin Juilliard School offer courses and degrees at the undergraduate level?
There are no plans to offer undergraduate courses and degrees at this time. However, this may be reassessed in the future.

15. What performance opportunities are available?

Students at The Tianjin Juilliard School have numerous opportunities to perform, both on campus, and with partner organizations throughout China and beyond. Students perform in orchestra, small and large-scale mixed ensembles, chamber music groups, side-by-side with resident faculty, and in project-based residencies with visiting faculty and guest artists. 

16. What other learning opportunities are available at The Tianjin Juilliard School? 
In addition to Graduate Studies and the Pre-College, The Tianjin Juilliard School offers a variety of program in Public Education and Continuing Education, public performances, and exhibits. The campus also has a permanent venue, Juilliard Imagination, which is an innovative learning environment featuring interactive exhibitions.

17. What are the tuition rates?
The 2024-2025 Graduate Studies tuition is 220,600 RMB for Chinese nationals and 387,400 RMB for international students (USD amount dependent on exchange rate, please see website for more detailed information).  The Pre-College annual tuition for 2024-2025 academic year is 107,500 RMB.  

18. Are scholarships offered?
The Tianjin Juilliard School offers merit scholarships, need-based grants, graduate fellowships, and graduate assistantships each year. In the previous year, each accepted student was awarded at least one scholarship, grant, or fellowship. Award criteria include the Graduate Studies audition results, academic records, recommendations, application materials, and institutional need for each program and instrument.

19. Is there housing for students?

20. What majors are offered?
The Tianjin Juilliard School offers a U.S.-accredited Master of Music (MM) degree with majors in instrumental and orchestral studies, instrumental and chamber music studies, and collaborative piano. These majors are unique to the Tianjin Juilliard branch campus and meet a growing need in the region for performing artists trained in collaborative musicianship.

21. Will I have weekly private lessons with a resident faculty member? 
Students in the Master of Music degree program take weekly private lessons with a teacher on their instrument. This private study is supplemented by frequent coaching and opportunities to work with visiting faculty and guest artists.

22. How do the degree programs at The Juilliard School in New York differ from those in Tianjin?
The Juilliard School in New York offers degree programs in dance (BFA), drama (BFA and MFA), and music (BM, MM, DMA, GD, and AD). The Tianjin Juilliard School offers a Master of Music degree with majors in instrumental and orchestral studies, instrumental and chamber music studies, and collaborative piano.

23. How are the degrees offered by The Tianjin Juilliard School accredited?
The Tianjin Juilliard School’s Graduate programs are accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, in line with the New York campus. The degrees are recognized by the Ministry of Education in China.

24. When can I apply for the master’s program? 
Applications for fall 2025 opens September 1, 2024. Final auditions will be held live at select locations worldwide and via final audition video recording. Please check the Admissions section of our website for the latest updates.

25. How many times can I apply to the Master of Music program?
The maximum number of application attempts is three. If you apply to this degree program and are denied admission, you can apply again in a future application cycle. After three unsuccessful attempts to apply to the same major, you are no longer eligible to apply. 

26. How long will it take to complete a master’s program at The Tianjin Juilliard School?
The master’s program requires two years of full-time study.

27. What is the language of instructions in the Graduate Studies program?
Classes are taught in English. Applicants are required to submit proof of English language proficiency if English is not their native language.

28. What courses are offered in Graduate Studies?

29. What are the requirements for applying to the Master of Music program?
Musicians who have completed a bachelor’s degree are eligible to apply to the MM program. Musicians are also eligible to apply for a second master’s degree at Tianjin Juilliard if their existing master’s degree is different from the one offered by our school. All instruction is in English, therefore proficiency in the English language is required. Applicants must complete an online application and provide required supplemental materials, including a prescreening recording and an English language test score. The prescreening requirement will be waived for current Juilliard College students. Please continue to check the Admissions section for updates on application procedures and audition repertoire.  

30. Are students in Tianjin affiliated with The Juilliard School in New York?
Students who complete the master’s program in Tianjin will be alumni of The Juilliard School, with an accredited Juilliard degree.

31. If I attend The Tianjin Juilliard School, will I be able to transfer to The Juilliard School?
No, students may not transfer between Tianjin Juilliard and Juilliard in either direction. Tianjin Juilliard alumni are welcome to audition to attend Juilliard for a new program after completing the Master of Music at Tianjin Juilliard. If a student opts to exit Tianjin Juilliard before completion of the program to attend Juilliard, the student would not be able to transfer completed Tianjin Juilliard credits.

32. Will I get priority for admission consideration for The Juilliard School in New York if I attend The Tianjin Juilliard School?
Juilliard’s audition process requires each applicant to undergo the same artistic assessment by faculty in order to ensure equal opportunity for all applicants.

33. When does the application for the Pre-College open?
The application for the Pre-College opens in the fall before enrollment. Please check the Pre-College section for the latest updates.

34. Where are Pre-College classes held?
Pre-College and Graduate Studies classes are held at our campus in Binhai, Tianjin.

35. What is the enrollment process for the Pre-College?
The Pre-College in Tianjin admits students ages 8 to 18 through a competitive application and audition process. All applicants are required to submit pre-screening recordings. Selected applicants will be invited to a live audition. There is no English-language test required during the admissions process. 36. What is the language of instruction in the Pre-College?
Classes are taught bilingually in English and Chinese.

Tianjin Juilliard's Public Education is the bridge connecting The Juilliard School's world-class music education to the Chinese public through a variety of programs for music learners of all ages and levels. 41. What are the differences between the Music Development Program and the Pre-College? 
The Pre-College is a comprehensive, conservatory-style program offered at Tianjin Juilliard every Saturday from September to May, and the Music Development Program offers high-quality, age-appropriate, and impactful music instruction for students from 3 to 18 years-old on Sundays at Tianjin Juilliard. The Music Development Program faculty is a group of teachers auditioned, interviewed, and endorsed by the Tianjin Juilliard resident faculty.
