Graduate Student Handbook
The Tianjin Juilliard Graduate School Student Handbook ("Graduate Student Handbook") contains information on departmental, academic, personal and social development opportunities; clarifies values, standards and expectations for which the School holds all student community members accountable; and provides resources and support services for students to help establish strong foundations on which to build their professional career as an "artist as citizen." It is the expectation of The Tianjin Juilliard School that all students are responsible for reading and understanding the information within the Student Handbook, in addition to your rights and responsibilities as a Tianjin Juilliard community member.
All students will be notified of any addendum's or changes to the Graduate Student Handbook via Tianjin Juilliard e-mail.
The Tianjin Juilliard School (the “School”) strives to create a safe, comfortable, and professional environment that is conducive to the educational and personal well-being of all students. It is expected that all members of the School community, including without limitation School officials, employees, students, programs and organizations contribute to fostering such an environment. In doing so, it is important to always be aware of the rights and responsibilities held by each student.
The Tianjin Juilliard School Student Code of Conduct
The Tianjin Juilliard School Student Code of Conduct ("Code of Conduct") sets out the standards of conduct expected of its students, which supersedes all other School documents, and applies to all students enrolled at the School for their duration, without pause (including breaks and students on a leave of absence), until graduation from the School.
When students choose to accept admission to the School, they accept the rights and responsibilities of membership in the School’s academic and social community. As members of the School community, students are expected to uphold its values by maintaining a high standard of conduct.
Student misconduct is defined as any student behavior that violates rules of the School as stated in this document; contained within any School publication, or on the website; and/or is in violation of applicable laws, rules or regulations of the People’s Republic of China ("Applicable Laws").
Students who are present or accompanying others while in the act of violating the Code of Conduct may be deemed as culpable as the violators and may be subject to sanctions.
Occasionally, the rules of the School and the law will overlap, but the School does not attempt to duplicate the law or legal system. The School reserves the right to pursue matters through its student conduct system that may also be addressed in the legal system.
Serious violations or persistent minor violations of School rules, policies, or regulations may result in suspension or expulsion.
Non-residential students are expected to abide by the same standards of community behavior as residential students as outlined in the Code of Conduct.
The School reserves the right to adjudicate misconduct that occurs off campus or outside the main School Building and Residence Hall (“School premises”) if such misconduct becomes known to the School.

Essential Elements of Curriculum
Students admitted to the educational programs of the Tianjin Juilliard School are held to high professional standards in preparation for successful careers in the performing arts. To that end, they must possess aptitude, abilities, and skills in the following six areas, and be able to perform independently described functions in each area:

Residence Life
The Tianjin Juilliard Residence Hall offers students a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment that fosters development of practical life skills and independence. Residents are from all over the world, creating a multifaceted community of artists where students can enjoy building friendships, generating new ideas, and collaborating outside of the classroom.
The Office of Residence Life consists of one full-time professional staff member who lives in the building and provide 24/7 emergency response. Additionally, four live-in graduate resident assistants (RAs) will be recruited to support students in having the best possible experience.
All incoming Tianjin Juilliard graduate students are encouraged to live in the Residence Hall on a bed available basis. The School cannot guarantee housing for all students as a result of limited capacity. Priorities will be given to housing assistantship recipients. All international students are required to live in the Residence Hall.
We strive to nurture complete musicians, and also happy and productive young adults who will become leaders in their respective fields.
Disability Housing Accommodations
The Tianjin Juilliard School is committed to creating an accessible campus where all students are afforded the opportunity for educational and social success regardless of disability. Students with temporary or permanent disabilities, including medical, mental, emotional, or physical health-related issues, and other functional barriers may apply to Juilliard New York’s Office of Academic Support and Disability Services (OASDS) for reasonable disability housing accommodations at Tianjin Juilliard. Services for Students with Disabilities
The Tianjin Juilliard School is committed to providing qualified students who have disabilities an opportunity to participate on an equal basis in the educational programs on the Tianjin campus. Tianjin Juilliard students should contact Tianjin Juilliard’s Office of Academic Support and Disability Services (OASDS) to request information about possible disability-related support and accommodations. OASDS looks forward to welcoming you to the Tianjin Juilliard community, learning about your circumstances, and providing assistance with your education.
A student with a qualifying disability who seeks OASDS support must start that process with the Tianjin Juilliard OASDS. For accommodations to be granted, a student has to provide any necessary information and documentation to OASDS for review and meet with a member of OASDS to complete the interactive process, which is essential for identifying accommodations that are responsive to the individual student’s needs. Once the registration, documentation, and review process is completed, OASDS will provide the student, where appropriate, with an individually determined accommodation plan. A student may not make individual accommodation arrangements with a faculty member without first utilizing the OASDS process. Please note that each semester, some adjustments to accommodations may be called for, and students will need to work with OASDS to review accommodations. A student with a disability who does not seek accommodations may inform OASDS of their situation but is not required to do so. OASDS staff members are always available to meet, answer questions or provide guidance.
Details of specific procedures and requirements are available from OASDS. Forms that need to be completed and information about your rights and responsibilities are also provided by OASDS. From time to time, Tianjin Juilliard may change or modify these policies, procedures, and forms, and you should make an effort to stay current on any changes. However, Tianjin Juilliard’s commitment to its students and to their opportunity to participate equally at Tianjin Juilliard remains constant.
To begin the process for receiving services from Tianjin Juilliard, a student will submit the completed Disability Accommodation Request Form and the Disability Authorization for Release of Information Form and meet with an OASDS representative. The student should also review the Confidentiality Policy and the Grievance Procedure to be informed of the student’s rights and responsibilities. To be considered for services, including accommodations, the student needs to submit any requested medical documentation and participate in the interactive process to determine an appropriate and reasonable accommodation, if one is necessary. Requests and documentation are to be submitted sufficiently in advance to permit an assessment and determination about accommodations for the start of a class or project in a reasonable period of time.
The student agrees that by signing and submitting the Disability Accommodation Request Form, the Disability Authorization for Release of Information Form and related materials, they are affirming that the information they have provided is complete and accurate, and that they have read and understood the information being provided by OASDS about the institutional-wide policies and procedures.

How to Register with OASDS as a Student With a Disability
If you think you might benefit from support, we encourage you to register with OASDS by following these steps:
- Contact OASDS (oasds@tianjinjuilliard.edu.cn) to discuss your specific situation.
- We require two forms in order to determine eligibility for registration:
- Disability Accommodation Request Form
- Release of Disability Information Form
Depending on the nature of your disability, we may require a doctor’s note or other supporting documentation. Please note that we keep your information confidential.
- Once we have received all required documentation from you, we will discuss your accommodation requests. We will then engage in an interactive process with you to determine a personalized accommodation plan.
If you do not have documentation or have never been diagnosed, you can still confer with OASDS and discuss your situation.
Registration is a voluntary process and may occur at any time during the student’s course of study. However, it is recommended that requests are made with enough time to be reasonably implemented. Accommodations will be implemented after approval by OASDS and are not retroactive to the beginning of the semester.
Students who wish to document a disability may include, but are not limited to:
- Students entering Tianjin Juilliard for the first time or returning after a leave of absence who have a known disability;
- Students experiencing educational difficulty who are referred by a faculty member or Tianjin Juilliard official for consultation regarding the possibility of disability; and

Important Items for Tianjin Juilliard Faculty to Note:
- OASDS understands that not all accommodations will be applicable to all course contents. If you have specific questions about how to accommodate a student in the context of your course, please contact OASDS staff so we can work together to find the most applicable accommodation(s).
- OASDS staff are not able to disclose the type of disability that the student has registered for without written permission from the student due to privacy laws. However, we can discuss the student’s accommodations and work together to help you figure out how to implement their accommodations in your classroom.
- Students are required to self-identify for accommodations and must first register with OASDS in order to set up formal accommodations. Faculty are NOT required to provide any accommodations to a student until the faculty member has received a Reasonable Accommodation Plan Agreement from OASDS, which formally notifies them of the accommodations she or he is eligible for.
- If a student discloses a disability to you, it is imperative that you both inform the student that she or he needs to register first with the Office of Academic Support and Disability Services to seek formal accommodations AND contact OASDS to report that you have referred a student to OASDS!
- Faculty should NOT ask a student about the nature of her/his disability; rather, faculty should initiate a conversation about how to apply the accommodations stipulated in the student's Reasonable Accommodation Plan Agreement to a particular course’s content.
- Faculty should NEVER ask a student about her/his disability or accommodations in front of other students. This would be a violation of privacy of a student with a disability and is not appropriate.

Tuition and Expenses
Payment of Tuition
Newly admitted students wishing to enroll are required to pay an advance of RMB 3,500 towards annual tuition no later than April 15 to confirm their attendance. The advance will be credited towards tuition due for the Fall semester.
A bill for the Fall 2025 semester tuition will be emailed to new and returning students by July 4, 2025 and must be paid by August 4, 2025. A bill for the Spring 2026 semester tuition will be available by December 1, 2025 and must be paid by December 26, 2025. Payments must be made in RMB via wire transfer.
Financial holds will be placed on the records for students whose Tianjin Juilliard accounts show a past-due balance after the billing due date.
Please note that if any portion of the tuition is outstanding after the stated due dates, payments will be subject to the following sanction:

Refunds
A student whose tuition payments and scholarship exceed the amount due will receive a refund. Refunds are available during the eighth week of the fall semester and are generally available the eighth week of the spring semester. Refunds will not be issued until all funding has been received by Tianjin Juilliard and credited to the student’s account.
Leave of Absence and Withdrawals
If a student wishes to withdraw from the School, written notice must be given to the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs. The official date of withdrawal will be the day the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs is notified or the last day of attendance in any educationally related activity (including participation in performances), whichever is later.
For withdrawals that occur after the semester has begun reimbursement may be required.
If written notice of withdrawal is received by the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs before the first day of classes of either semester, the student has no responsibility for the semester’s tuition or housing charges. Students who withdraw during either semester are liable for a portion up to 100 percent of that semester’s tuition and housing charges, depending on the date of withdrawal, as follows:

After the fourth week: | 100% |
Please note that residence hall refunds for students who withdraw from the School will follow the guidelines set forth in the residence hall contract.
Should a student be dismissed, the same policy of tuition responsibility will apply.
Payment and Contract for Residence Hall
For students moving into the Residence Hall on August 12-14, 2024, half of the annual residence hall fee are due by August 12, 2024. The reminder of the residence hall fees is due December 26, 2024. These fees will appear on the tuition bill and must be paid via wire transfer.
Note: For students who are approved to arrive late or leave earlier than the end of semester, a pro-rated housing bill will be generated accordingly.

Public Education
Tianjin Juilliard's Public Education division is the bridge connecting The Juilliard School's world-class music education to the Chinese public through a variety of programs. Private instrumental lessons, online music courses, chorus, master classes, and summer and winter camps are offered to music learners of all ages.
