Personnel Policies for Part-Time Staff

Compensation Policies
Payroll
Part-time staff are paid on the 10th day of the month based on the working hours documented by their respective departments for the period from the 21st of the previous month to the 20th of the current month. The department overseeing part-time staff is responsible for accurately recording their work hours and submitting a monthly summary of labor fees to the Office of Human Resources before the stipulated deadline [the 25th of each month] to ensure timely payment by the third-party agency.
Term of Service
Personnel Categories
- Part-time staff are those employees who assigned by a third-party agency to provide service in the School and receive a set service fees from the third-party agency each pay period but work less than full time. There is no employment relationship of any kind between the part-time staff and the School.
- Part-time hourly staff are those employees who work variable hours each pay period and report hours worked on time sheets.
Service Agreements
Part-time staff will sign service agreements with a third-party agency which will be responsible for paying service fees on a monthly basis, declaring various taxes in accordance with Chinese law, and paying accidental insurance for part-time staff during the agreement term period.
Part-time Staff Insurance
Part-time staff who have signed service agreements with the third-party agency are covered by Employer Liability insurance (EL) provided by the third-party agency, which includes accidental insurance, accidental medical treatment, compensation for lost income due to work-related injuries or disabilities, resulting in personal injury and death caused by third-party liability, and property damage caused by third-party liability.
Attendance Policy
Part-time staff should deliver services promptly at the designated time and location in the School, ensuring timely and high-quality completion of assigned tasks. Part-time staff will be paid for the services actually provided.
Rules of Conduct
Tianjin Juilliard may take disciplinary action (up to and including refunding to a third-party agency) against any staff for failing to adhere to recognized standards of behavior. Additional examples of unacceptable behavior at Tianjin Juilliard include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Three or more unexcused absences without prior written approval within one year.
2. Falsification of employment application or other school records and forms.
3. Unauthorized possession, use or copying of school records, documents, data or disclosure of information contained in such records, documents and data to unauthorized persons.
4. Possession of firearms, knife tools or other types of weapons while on Tianjin Juilliard premises.
5. Creating or contributing to unsafe or unsanitary conditions.
6. Theft or misappropriation of property belonging to the Tianjin Juilliard, to a student, or to another Tianjin Juilliard employee.
7. Accessing inappropriate internet sites while using a Tianjin Juilliard computer or while on Tianjin Juilliard premises.
8. Failing or refusing to perform satisfactorily the duties and responsibilities of the job or related duties as assigned.
9. Making statements promoting any religion or religious activity in the workplace at Tianjin Juilliard.
10. Discussing undesirable and sensitive topics, including but not limited to violence (such as blood or corpses), sexual content, gambling, abetting others to commit crimes, pornography, sensitive contents regarding national and public security, in public and/or on Tianjin Juilliard premises, or on school resource platforms.
11. Any violations of Tianjin Juilliard policies
12. Any violations of local law.
The School Policies are available on the Policies and Consumer Information page on the Tianjin Juilliard website. Part-time staff understand and agree that it is their responsibility to log on to the platform regularly to keep track of the latest provisions and regulations stipulated in each policy, and to abide by and implement them. Any violation will be subject to the School’s disciplinary procedures.
Termination
Part-time staff are required to give a minimum of one calendar-month’s notice in writing to the supervisor, with a copy to the Office of Human Resources.
Part-time staff terminated by Tianjin Juilliard will be given at least one month’s notice of such termination through the third-party agency, except in cases where gross misconduct violating the terms of this Policy requires immediate termination.
Upon the last working day with Tianjin Juilliard, the departing part-time faculty must return all properties belonging to Tianjin Juilliard, including but not limited to computers, digital products, relevant electronic files, and key cards, and settle any outstanding financial items (if any) from the service period. If the above property is not returned on time, Tianjin Juilliard reserves the right, in accordance with the agreement between Tianjin Juilliard and the part-time faculty member's employer, to make a corresponding deduction from any fees payable to the part-time faculty member by their employer in order to obtain appropriate compensation. A fee of 250 RMB per key card will be deducted if the key card is not returned.
References
Proof of employment documentation for any part-time staff should be consulted through the third-party agency that signed the service agreement with the staff member.
Effective Date
This Policy is effective as of July 1, 2024.
Early Years
Introduction
The Early Years program is designed as a music enrichment class for preschool children aged 3 to 6 years to experience with their parent or caregiver.
The curriculum is collaboratively designed by music education experts from both China and the United States and incorporates various aspects of renowned musical pedagogies including Orff, Dalcroze, and Kodaly, among others. The content includes singing, playing, dancing, active listening, inner hearing, and music improvisation. Through diverse musical activities, this program aims to inspire children's interest in music, cultivate their self-confidence, physical coordination, memory, and concentration, and enhance their deeper understanding and appreciation of music.

3-Year-Old Age Group
Music Concepts and Musicianship
- Understand the meaning of the following music elements: Beat, Rhythm, Eighth note pair, Quarter note, Half note, Quarter rest, 2/4 meter, Stick notation, bars, and bar lines.
- Identify fast/slow, loud/soft, high/low by ear.
- Read music containing the listed music elements in both picture notation and stick notation.
- Use movement to express musical emotions and content.
- Participate in group dances to experience musical form, beat, and tempo.
Vocal Performance
- Sing a variety of simple songs.
- Sing in groups while responding to the cues of a conductor.
Instrument Performance
- Explore different techniques for playing classroom instruments.
4-Year-Old Age Group
Music Concepts and Musicianship
- Understand the meaning of the following music elements: do, re, mi, sol, la, sixteenth note, five-line notation.
- Identify the listed rhythm by ear and through imitation.
- Be able to notate melodic/nursery rhyme fragments containing the above musical concepts in stick notation, and five-line notation.
- Sing a variety of songs that incorporate the listed music elements.
- Read music containing the listed music elements in both stick notation and five-line notation.
- Gain more experience in group dance to understand music form, beat, and tempo.
- Use movement to express musical emotions, content, and elements.
- Improvise simple rhythmic and melodic solos on various classroom instruments.
Vocal Performance
- Sing a variety of simple songs, becoming increasingly accurate in rhythm and pitch.
- Sing in groups while responding to the cues and dynamic changes of a conductor.
Instrument Performance
- Learn standard techniques for playing classroom instruments.
- Identify the distinct sounds of classroom instruments.
- Use non-pitched instruments to accompany the songs they sing.
5-Year-Old Age Group
Musicianship
- Understand the meaning of the following music elements: fa, si, higher do, lower la, lower sol, half dotted note, whole note, eighth rest, half rest, 3/4 and 4/4 meter, tempo, dynamics, and ostinato.
- Sing a variety of songs that incorporate the listed music elements.
- Identify the solfege syllables in familiar melody lines.
- Read music containing the listed music elements in both stick notation and five-line notation.
- Play two-part rhythms or sing and play two-part music in a group setting.
- Gain more experience in group dance to understand music form, meter, and tempo.
- Use movement to express musical emotions, content, and elements.
- Improvise simple rhythmic and melodic solos on various classroom instruments.
- Create rhythmic ostinatos to accompany songs and music.
Vocal Performance
- Sing expressively.
- Sing in groups while responding to the cues, tempo, and dynamics of a conductor.
Instrument Performance
- Use classroom instruments to play independent instrumental music in a mini ensemble.
Schedule
The Early Years activities are held every Sunday morning between September and May, according to the academic calendar. The proposed teaching schedule for the 2024 academic year is from 11:00 AM to 11:50 PM.
Please note that every Early Years student must be accompanied by at least one parent or adult caregiver in the classroom.
Registration and Tuition
Tuition: RMB 4,500 per semester (15 weeks)

Lower Primary
Introduction
The Lower Primary program is specially designed for students in grades 1-3, or roughly ages 6-9 years old, inspiring curiosity about the world of music while providing a solid foundation of musical understanding. Through singing, fundamental skills training, and instrument playing, students will enhance their knowledge through rich, interactive experiences.
Curriculum
The curriculum for the Lower Primary program includes compulsory courses in the Elgar Chorus, Music Literacy, as well as Instrumental Exploration and/or one-to-one Instrumental Instruction (must choose one or both).
Elgar Chorus
Choral singing is one of the most basic, yet most important aspects of a music education for a young music learner. The benefits of choral participation go beyond the musical lessons being taught. For most students, choral singing is the first form of collaborative music making and will help them become part of a larger musical community with new friends.
The Elgar chorus focuses on a healthy and fun approach to singing, introducing students to a diverse repertoire including songs from China and cultures around the world. The chorus has weekly rehearsals and two performances at TJS each year, and other performance opportunities throughout Tianjin.
Learning Objectives:
- Establishing polyphonic auditory thinking
- Cultivating healthy singing breath and vocal habits
- Learning to follow conducting cues
- Performing choral pieces with two to three voice parts
Music Literacy (Beginner's Level)
Music Literacy is a comprehensive course that enhances sight-singing and ear training skills, music theory, and music history and culture. The courses aims to inspire children's curiosity about music, cultivate musical sensitivity and imagination, and gradually develop their ability to express music, boosting their confidence in music but also laying a solid foundation for their future musical journey.
Learning Objectives:
- Learning the fundamental components of music
- Understanding the relationship between music and other art forms such as painting, dance, literature, and drama to enhance artistic sensibility
- Mastering rhythm, tempo, melody, intervals, chords, and scales through exercises in listening, singing, reading, and writing
- Analyzing the structure of musical compositions
- Comprehensive application: collective composition, improvisation, and performing in multiple voice within choral or instrumental ensembles
Instrument Exploration
Instrument Exploration is specifically designed for children aged 6 to 8 years old, introducing them to the wonderful world of Western classical instruments. This is a 30-week course divided into two semesters. Students will explore various types of instruments, including string, woodwind, brass, percussion, keyboard, and plucked string instruments. Through interactive and observational activities, students will learn the various nuances of how each instrument is played, how sound is produced, and the various timbres and tones of each instrument.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the primary instruments in the families of string, woodwind, brass, percussion instruments
- Hands-on experience with instruments
- Listen to live demonstrations by performing artists in the Tianjin Juilliard community
- Group ensemble training
One-on-one Instrumental Instruction (minimum 30 minutes)
The most important aspect of instrumental training for young music learners is to set a solid foundation rooted in healthy playing in a fun and supportive learning atmosphere. All instrumental teachers are trained and certified by the Tianjin Juilliard School, and themselves are world-class performing artists who studied in conservatories throughout the world. Lessons for this age group begin at 30 minutes, but can be expanded with the agreement of the teacher. Lessons are offered in most areas, including piano, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and harp.

Please note that one-to-one instrumental instruction is scheduled outside of this time based on the teacher’s availability.

To join the MDP Lower Primary, students must be between 6 and 8 years old and pass an entry assessment. The assessment includes:
- A self-selected solo singing piece
- Melody imitation
- Sight-singing

Upper Primary
Introduction
The Upper Primary program is designed for students in grades 4-6, or roughly 9-12 years old, reinforcing music fundamentals while pushing students to think more critically about classical music and its origins through different cultures throughout history.
Curriculum
The curriculum for the Upper Primary program includes compulsory courses in the Britten Chorus and Music Literacy. Students may elect to enroll in one-to-one Instrumental Instruction and English for Musical Purposes.
Britten Chorus
Choral singing is one of the most basic, yet most important aspects of a music education for a young music learner. The benefits of choral participation go beyond the musical lessons being taught. For most students, choral singing is the first form of collaborative music making and will help them become part of a larger musical community with new friends.
The Britten chorus builds on the foundational elements of the younger Elgar chorus, and continues to focus on a healthy and fun approach to singing. The Britten chorus Introduced more advanced repertoire including songs from China and cultures around the world. The chorus has weekly rehearsals and two performances at TJS each year, and other performance opportunities throughout Tianjin.
Learning Objectives:
- Cultivate an aesthetic appreciation for choral listening
- Maintain healthy vocal usage during voice changes
- Adjust personal timbre in real-time based on heard choral effects
- Use appropriate timbre according to the musical style
- Perform more complex classical choral works with multiple voice parts
- Lead one's own voice section in practice as a section leader
- Conduct the choir
Music Literacy (Intermediate Level)
Music Literacy is a comprehensive course that enhances sight-singing and ear training skills, music theory, and music history and culture. The course aims to inspire children's curiosity about music, cultivate musical sensitivity and imagination, and gradually develop their ability to express music, boosting their confidence in music but also laying a solid foundation for their future musical journey.
Learning Objectives:
- Study the timeline of classical music development and become familiar with composers and their works
- Listen to a wide range of classical music pieces and memorize the main themes of major works
- Identify the musical style and period to which a piece belongs; distinguish between instrumental timbres in monophonic and polyphonic works; analyze the form and content expression of pieces from the perspective of musical periods and styles
- Comprehensive application: create simple improvisations in the style of a specified period; compose simple two-part pieces using staff notation; perform polyphonic singing, etc.
One-on-one Instrumental Instruction
The most important aspect of instrumental training for young music learners is to set a solid foundation rooted in healthy playing in a fun and supportive learning atmosphere. All instrumental teachers are trained and certified by the Tianjin Juilliard School, and themselves are world-class performing artists who studied in conservatories throughout the world. Lessons for this age group are 60 minutes and are offered in most areas, including piano, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and harp.
Trial Lesson
Designed for students who remain undecided on selecting a primary instrument, this course offers 6 hands-on 30-minute sessions on an instrument with a single instructor, serving as a bridge to one-on-one instruction. Students must provide their own instruments, except for piano and harp.
English for Musical Purposes
Both "language" and "music" are bridges for connection and cultural exchange. English for Musical Purposes focuses on English education within the context of music learning and is taught by teachers with backgrounds in both music and language education.
This course aims to cultivate the language skills required in professional musical practice and broader music appreciation, enabling students to communicate effectively with their teachers and classmates. It fosters their growth as a globally-minded thinker and prepares them embrace diverse cultures.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand, accumulate and actively use the musical terms needed by professional musicians
- Build the confidence of using English language to share music knowledge, experience and personal understandings with others
- To develop students’ cross-cultural awareness in international music learning contexts
- Explore the connection between music and personal identity
- Discover people, stories, learning, and growth within the music community
- Study the English names of instrument families and compare Eastern and Western instruments
- Use music to imagine, create, and tell a compelling story in English

To join the MDP Upper Primary program, students must be between 9 and 12 years old and pass an entry assessment. After completing the application, applicants will be contacted via email. The assessment can be conducted online or in person during Open Day events. The assessment fee for the Music Development Program is 50 RMB.
Audition requirement includes:
- A self-selected solo singing piece
- Melody imitation
- Sight-singing
*Students applying for Instrumental Instruction should prepare the following materials to submit:
- The student's personal resume
- Recent performance videos including two contrasting pieces
*Contrasting pieces: Two pieces composed by different composers with distinctly contrasting styles; for example, an Allegro and an Adagio movement from the same sonata.
