Overview
The inaugural Tianjin Juilliard Piano Festival (TJPF) took place from July 30 to August 13, 2023 at The Tianjin Juilliard School in China.
The festival inspired and encouraged music-making of the highest levels, offering two weeks of rich and vibrant programs. Piano participants gained invaluable experience working alongside the world's finest pianists and teachers through master classes and private lessons, including the exclusive opportunity of performing concertos with the Suzhou Symphony Orchestra and prominent conductors.
TJPF offered a total of two concerto concerts, a final gala concert conducted by Chen Lin, three performances by eminent artists, 12 public master classes, 12 participant recitals, several lectures, and more than 250 hours of private lessons.
With a line-up of stellar artists, the festival aimed to create a world-class event for young pianists and the music-loving community to come together for an experience to remember.

Highlights and Opportunities
CONCERTOS
One of the festival's biggest highlights included an exclusive opportunity for all of the performing participants to collaborate with a conductor and an orchestra.
Each Young Artist had the opportunity to choose to participate in the concerto competition, accompanied by a second piano. Prior to the competition, two rehearsals with a second piano was arranged. Six winners were then selected and had the privilege to perform a full concerto with the Suzhou Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jiajing Lai. Concerto participation was optional.
Each Junior participant had the opportunity to have one rehearsal with the QingXin Ensemble, conducted by Jiajing Lai, playing one movement of a concerto. Prior to their collaboration with the ensemble, a rehearsal with a second piano was arranged. Concerto participation was optional.
The festival provided accompanists (2nd piano) for rehearsals and competition.
MASTER CLASSES
Young Artist: Each Young Artist participant had an opportunity to play in a master class. Each master class was two hours long and facilitated three participants.
Junior: Only selected Junior participants had an opportunity to play in a master class. Each master class was two hours long and facilitated six participants.
All pieces were required to be played from memory. These master classes were open to the public.
PRIVATE LESSONS
Young Artist: Each Young Artist participant received six (6) one-hour private lessons. Free repertoire.
Junior: Each Junior participant received three (3) one-hour private lessons. Free repertoire.
PARTICIPANT RECITALS
There were 12 participant recitals throughout the festival. They were open to the public. Each Young Artist was scheduled to play in two recitals, and each Junior was scheduled to play in one recital.
All pieces had to be played from memory.
LECTURES
The festival will present three wonderful and highly informative lectures: "Life at The Juilliard School - What Makes it Special" by Yoheved Kaplinsky, “Playing with Orchestra - the Schumann Piano Concerto” by Arie Vardi and Xiaohan Wang, and “My Piano Compositions” by acclaimed composer, Ping Gao.
PRACTICE FACILITIES
Scheduled practice time was arranged for each performing participant in practice rooms equipped with Steinway grand pianos. The Tianjin Juilliard School was open from 8am to midnight throughout the Festival.
