About the Program

EPM-XT (Enrichment for Practicing Musicians-XT) is a three-year non-credit, non-matriculated English language and musical skills development program, designed for practicing musicians whose first language is not English and who are seeking high-caliber training and preparation to enter a master’s program where English is the language of instruction. This program is created especially for students of the Tianjin Conservatory of Music (TJCM).

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply, you must be already enrolled as a student of the Tianjin Conservatory of Music (TJCM) at the time of enrollment in the EPM-XT program. You must have a high level of musical skill and be able to show the potential to complete your bachelor of music degree on an accelerated track in three years.

Program Structure

EPM-XT English classes offer combined training in general and musical English. These English classes will replace the normal college English courses at TJCM. The English part of EPM-XT also includes the following:

  • required online self-study activities provided by Tianjin Juilliard to complete during the summer to maintain English; occurs between first and second years
  • required summer IELTS ‘boot camp’ (70 hours); occurs between second and third years

Musical skills development includes ongoing studio lessons with Tianjin Juilliard faculty, and the potential for participation in Tianjin Juilliard performance opportunities, such as the Tianjin Juilliard Orchestra.

Location

The EPM-XT program takes place on the campus of The Tianjin Juilliard School. Both the English and musical skills development parts of EPM-XT will be scheduled according to the Tianjin Juilliard academic calendar.

Admissions process

There are two situations to consider:

  1. Applicants to the EPM-XT program must pass an audition process conducted by Tianjin Juilliard faculty and receive an offer of acceptance from TJCM. Upon admission to TJCM and successful completion of the Tianjin Juilliard audition, students will be matriculated into the EPM-XT program.
  2. If you are a current TJCM student interested in the EPM-XT program, you must apply to the EPM-XT program during your first or second year of study, following the same admission process outlined above.

More information regarding the specific audition procedures and repertoire requirements for the EPM-XT program will be announced.

Certificate of Completion

At the end of three years of EPM-XT study, TJCM students who satisfactorily complete all the music and English requirements of EPM-XT are eligible to receive a certificate of completion.1 The certificate provides evidence that students have achieved a level of English language communication and critical thinking ability that would enable a successful start to learning in future graduate study at a music conservatory or university where English is used to learn and teach.

The certificate of completion has specific benefits2 for applicants to Tianjin Juilliard master degree programs. For example, if you have this certificate, you may be eligible for specific preferential considerations such as:

  • The requirement to attend the English Language Proficiency (ELP) interview of Tianjin Juilliard is waived; however, applicants must still submit an official English score e.g., IELTS or TOEFL that meets the regular entrance requirements of Tianjin Juilliard;
  • The requirement to submit pre-screening videos of musical performance is waived; applicants are advanced automatically to the live audition round.

1The certificate of completion does not lead to the conferral of the bachelor's degree. The bachelor of music degree can only be awarded by TJCM upon successful completion of degree requirements.

2The benefits are only offered to EPM-XT students who apply to The Tianjin Juilliard School by December of the same year they are completing EPM-XT.

Note: The benefits are granted at the sole discretion of The Tianjin Juilliard School based on its admissions policies in effect at the time of the applicant's submission and do not constitute a contractual right, or a waiver of Tianjin Juilliard’s standard admission requirements, which may be modified by Tianjin Juilliard at any time.

Because Tianjin Juilliard offers a world-class and highly competitive master's degree program, we unfortunately are not able to guarantee admission to EPM-XT graduates. However, we will give every admission consideration to EPM-XT students who successfully compete for admission musically through our rigorous audition process and have acquired the required English proficiency score of either an IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 89.

Tuition

The cost of EPM-XT program for academic year 2026-27 is RMB 110,300. This is the cost of attendance for the EPM-XT only, payable to TJS. TJCM tuition is handled by TJCM separately.
