Graduate Studies
Program Overview
Educating the next generation of artists, leaders, and global citizens
As we enter our fifth year, The Tianjin Juilliard Graduate Studies program continues to transform the landscape of music-making and education in China. Musicians will earn a Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School in the first joint venture to offer a U.S.-accredited music degree in China. The curriculum at the Tianjin campus is uniquely focused on collaborative musicianship and provides extensive performance opportunities throughout China, Asia, and beyond. The graduate degree is offered exclusively in collaborative majors – Instrumental and Orchestral Studies, Instrumental and Chamber Music Studies, and Collaborative Piano.
At the heart of Juilliard’s reputation for excellence is a faculty of distinguished artist-teachers. Students will work with an international roster of resident faculty, visiting faculty from The Juilliard School in New York, and other leading artists from around the world. The challenge embraced by our faculty is a complex one: to nurture and guide each musician toward the fullest expression of their potential, and to equip each student with the professional skills and experience to pursue a career in the arts.
Coaching, lessons, and rehearsals will engage musicians in an imaginative and constructive exchange of ideas. Students will strengthen their unique musical voice through individual mentorship, and develop musical dialogue with their peers through ensemble playing. Through coursework, students will strengthen their ability to generate and communicate interpretative opinions and explore the nature of collaboration using innovative techniques drawn from the worlds of acting, team-building, and music.
Performances
The Tianjin Juilliard School presents cutting-edge performances and other exciting public activities for the community to enjoy, contributing to the development of artistic life in Tianjin and the entire region. We are committed to bringing The Juilliard School’s renowned programming of the highest artistic level to music enthusiasts and audiences in Tianjin and beyond.
In this joyous 2024-25 season, we present a blend of timeless classics and cutting-edge repertoire through chamber music and orchestral performances. Tianjin Juilliard welcomes guest artists from across the world to collaborate in symposiums and festivals.
The Tianjin Juilliard School presents more than 200 music performances in our state-of-the-art facilities annually, in addition to concerts at other venues outside of Tianjin, and outreach performances in the community. We invite you to experience and enjoy world-class classical music presented by our students, faculty, and guest artists.

English Language Proficiency
English Language Proficiency (ELP)
The ability to communicate in English fluently, especially with a high degree of skill in speaking, listening, and reading, is an important factor in admissions decisions. You are required to demonstrate English language proficiency if English is not your native language. The Tianjin Juilliard School defines native language as the language first spoken as a child and the primary language spoken at home.
ELP Assessment
We assess your English language abilities using the following criteria:
- The results of a standardized English language proficiency test (hereinafter “official test score”)
- An interview with a member of the English faculty in The Tianjin Juilliard School1
- Your previous academic record
1Only applicants who have been invited to a live audition whose native language is not English will be scheduled for an interview. Interviews will take place in February or March 2025.
ELP Official Test Scores2
Applicants must submit an official test score from one of the following test types to demonstrate ELP:
- Cambridge English
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
2Note that your official test score alone is not sufficient for admission (assuming your audition meets our standard). Depending on the results of the full ELP Assessment, applicants who are admissible artistically may be admitted to the following programs:
- Master of Music (MM) degree – This accredited degree program requires academic work, including in music theory and music history. Applicants with an official test score of 89 TOEFL/6.5 IELTS/C1 Cambridge English or above, together with a successful interview assessment, may be admitted directly into the MM program.
- MM degree with Academic Communication and English (ACE)– Applicants with an official test score of between 80-89 TOEFL/6.0-6.5 IELTS who are being considered for admission are required to complete Academic Communication and English during their first year at The Tianjin Juilliard School and the summer prior to matriculation. Successful completion of ACE will meet the ELP entrance requirement for the Master of Music degree.
- Enrichment for Practicing Musicians (EPM)3– Applicants whose ELP falls below the threshold for admission to the MM degree or the MM degree with ACE may be offered a place in our EPM program. This program provides intensive instruction in English, plus applied music lessons, and opportunities for participation in ensembles.
3Official Test Scores Below the MM/ACE threshold – Applicants whose official test score falls between 31-80 TOEFL or 4.0-6.0 IELTS will be considered for admission to EPM on a case-by-case basis, using the criteria listed above. An interview with the Director of English Language Studies may be required in certain circumstances.

Attending Tianjin Juilliard Pre-College
Tianjin Juilliard Pre-College is a non-degree granting program and is intended as a supplement to our students’ full-time, Monday-Friday academic education. Many Pre-College students commute each weekend, from near or far, while staying enrolled in their current weekday school.
Tianjin Juilliard Pre-College accepts Chinese nationals as well as international students. The Pre-College does not grant visas to international students or provide study registration to domestic students since the program is non-degree granting. Those who are planning on relocating in order to attend the Pre-College should arrange their own weekday full-time study and visa if necessary.
Located in the district of Binhai, Tianjin, the 450,000 square-foot Tianjin Juilliard campus is designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the firm that oversaw the 2009 expansion of Juilliard’s Lincoln Center campus as well as major cultural venues around the globe. The central lobby of the new school is an extension of the surrounding public park and is accessible year-round as a gathering place for students, faculty, and visitors. The cutting-edge architectural design includes the building’s performance halls, teaching studios, practice rooms, and acoustical details that are the first of their kind in China. The campus is a five-minute walk from the Binhai high-speed rail station. By train, downtown Tianjin is a 25-minute ride from the school, with Beijing just one hour away.
