The Tianjin Juilliard School’s mission is to train musicians who will become global ambassadors in their respective fields, and English proficiency is a key component of this international status. English is the medium of instruction at Tianjin Juilliard, and specialist language support is a central feature of the Tianjin Juilliard experience.

About English for Collaborative Musicianship (ECM)

Students may be accepted into the Master of Music (MM) degree program with ECM.

ECM is designed to prepare and support students for graduate study at Tianjin Juilliard, and its specialized approach brings together modern communicative approaches to English language learning with the specific requirements of the Tianjin Juilliard music curriculum.

ECM starts with an online 6-week summer program, which combines teacher-led classes with peers as well as self-study activities on Canvas. Students then join semester-length English courses in fall and spring semesters during their first year at Tianjin Juilliard. Classes prepare and support students to succeed in all areas of study, including academic lessons, lectures and seminars, rehearsals and performance-related classes. Specific linguistic support is provided in many areas such as theory and analysis, collaboration, interpretation, entrepreneurship, research and professional practice. Fall/spring in-person classes are also supplemented by required self-study activities on Canvas.

Placing Out of ECM

Students admitted to the MM with ECM are required to complete ECM successfully during their first year of study at Tianjin Juilliard. At the end of the fall semester, students may place out of ECM by either  achieving an 'A' grade or achieving 'A-' or 'B' grade and achieving 85% or better on an in-house English test. Students will be evaluated based on their overall progress and completed work. Those who do not achieve the required grades will continue their study of English.
