Overview

Cultivating a Lifelong Love of Music

Music Discovery is a comprehensive online music program for children ages 6 to 10, designed to introduce elementary school students to the wonderful world of music through a variety of online musical activities.

Using an experiential learning method, students will be inspired through diverse and interactive musical activities. Through the exploration of history’s greatest master works, students will learn to empathize with composers and will be introduced to world cultures through music. Students will engage by feeling, imagining, understanding, expressing, analyzing, and composing music. This multisensory approach will lead students to connect with music in a very natural and fundamental way.

Music Discovery allows a student to:

  • Experience the world-class pedagogy of our internationally renowned school.
  • Explore the music world outside of the practice room through an experience-learn-practice teaching model.
  • Enhance their instrumental studies by building core music literacy skills and providing contextual information about the composers they perform.
  • Become inspired by their teachers, guest artists, and classmates, cultivating a lifelong love of music.

Curriculum

A Journey of Inspiration and Growth

The Music Discovery curriculum is divided into levels based on the depth of musical knowledge, the difficulty of musical activities, and the breadth of the musical works. A semester covers one complete level which is comprised of 15 one-hour lessons.

An International Learning Environment

Music Discovery is taught in both Chinese and English. Musical terms that appear in Latin, Italian, French, or German will be taught in their original languages, to create an authentic cultural learning environment for students.

Curriculum Developers and Teachers

Music Discovery is developed by an experienced team of musicians and educators from the United States and China, and is based on pedagogical approaches of Tianjin Juilliard in Binhai, and The Juilliard School in New York City. The curriculum is designed specially for the developmental level and learning style of primary school ages.

Music Discovery teachers have strong music and education backgrounds, with Master’s and Doctoral degrees from internationally renowned institutions. All teachers have completed training and are endorsed to teach Music Discovery by The Tianjin Juilliard School. Special guests, including Juilliard-trained artists, are invited to perform and interact with students during the course.

Enrollment and Class Placement

There is no entry criteria for this course as long as students are within the age range of 6 to 10 years old. After completing the registration information, the School will assign students to different classes (Chinese, Bilingual and English classes are available) based on their musical background and age. Small classes of 8 to 12 students ensure that students have ample opportunity to interact, share, and build connections with the teacher and peers during class time.
