Tianjin Juilliard Pre-College is delighted to share three major announcements for the 2024-2025 academic year: the addition of a tuba major, the expansion of the French horn faculty, and the creation of thePre-College Orchestra.
With the addition of the tuba major, the Pre-College now offers instruction in all orchestral majors, emphasizing the School’s commitment to fostering a comprehensive musical and educational experience for our students. The school has engaged Brett Stemple and Haiyu Wang, who will team-teach the inaugural class of tuba students. Dr. Stemple teaches in the TJS Graduate Studies program as well as at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory in Singapore, his bio can be found on the faculty page of the TJS website; and Mr. Wang is the principal tubist of the NCPAO in Beijing. The Tuba program is open for application.
In addition to these new faculty members, Yang Wen will be the new Pre-College French horn faculty, joining Xiaoguang Han. Mr. Wen earned his master's degree from Hochschule für Musik Saar in Germany, he has a strong reputation for developing young horn players and has successfully guided them to top conservatories around the world.

The addition of Wen Yang, Haiyu Wang, and TJS’s own Brett Stemple underscores this very point. I am excited for our young students who will have access to these inspiring individuals, and I look forward to seeing how they grow in the coming years.”
The 2024-2025 academic year will also see the launch of the Pre-College Orchestra. From Robert Ross, Chief Program Officer: “For a school focused so intensely on the art of collaborative music making, we see this new orchestra becoming one of the highlights of the Pre-College. Quality youth orchestra programs can be transformative educational experiences in a young musician’s journey. We will utilize the vast resources of TJS, including its world-renowned faculty, graduate student mentors, and state-of-the-art facilities and venues to give our students an exceptional learning environment.” The Pre-College Orchestra contributes to the school’s core mission of fostering teamwork, a collaborative spirit, and a profound appreciation for beauty of collective music making. The search for a conductor is currently underway.
Haiyu Wang
Haiyu Wang is currently the principal Tuba with the China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra (NCPA). He is also the adjunct instructor of tuba with the China Conservatory of Music. He served as an assistant instructor of tuba in the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University from 2015 to 2017. He held the tuba position with the China National Symphony Orchestra from 2011 to 2014. At the same time, he was also an instructor of tuba at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where he taught both the college and high school students.
Wang was awarded an honorable mention Diploma at the 51st International Competition in Markneukirchen in 2016. He won the mock orchestra audition and ranked first place at the Solo Artist Competition at the Northeast Regional Tuba & Euphonium Conference in 2015. He was the first prize winner at the Eighth Wind & Brass Ensemble Brass Solo Competition in 2010. He was also a semi-finalist or finalist in several international competitions including the Jeju International Brass Competition and the International Performer Competition in Brno.
At the age of 13, Wang was admitted into the Central Conservatory of Music Middle School, and studied tuba under the guidance of Bingyu Hu. He received his bachelor’s of music degree from Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in 2011 and his master’s of music degree with a Performer’s Certificate from Indiana University in 2016.
Yang Wen
Yang Wen has been invited to significant music festivals such as European Youth Music Festival in Berlin and Moritzburg Festival. He is an active musician who performed as guest principal horn with Theater Vorpommern in Greifswal, Kammeroper Orchester Köln, China’s National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra, and WuhanPhilharmonic Orchestra. He also played with Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, South Korea Busan Philharmonic Orchestra, China Philharmonic Orchestra, China National Symphony Orchestra, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra and Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra. Wen has held the position of horn faculty of Shandong University of the Arts since 2014.
Wen has served as the secretary-general and has organized the Beijing International Horn Festival since 2013. The festival invites more than 40 international horn musicians to Beijing for recitals, masterclasses and lectures. Wen was one of the founding members of China Horn Ensemble in 2015 and recorded its debut album “Horn Fusion,” under the label of Oehms Classics (Germany). The ensemble toured in Beijing, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Lanzhou, Hong Kong, Bremen, Munich, and Vienna. He has also organized successful summer festivals such as Alexander International Music Festival, Summer Camp of Horn in Sanya, and Intensive Summer Horn Program in Qingdao.
Wen earned his master's degree from Hochschule für Musik Saar in Germany, studied with Xiaoming Han and Ludwig Rast. He accomplished his undergraduate study in the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, studied with Xiaoming Han and Chengxin Zhang. Before that, he studied with Fei Song in the affiliated high school of Wuhan Conservatory of Music.
