Juilliard’s Statement on Academic and Artistic Freedom

Juilliard’s Statement on Academic and Artistic Freedom

The mission of The Juilliard School is to provide the highest caliber of artistic education for gifted musicians, dancers, and actors from around the world, so that they may achieve their fullest potential as artists, leaders, and global citizens.

To this end, The Juilliard School is committed to the general principles of academic and artistic freedom and guarantees Juilliard faculty the broadest possible latitude to perform, create, speak, write, publish, listen, challenge, teach, and learn, in the classroom, on the stage or other performance venues, or elsewhere on campus. This latitude includes expression that others may find unwelcome or offensive. This commitment assures Juilliard faculty the right to teach and students to learn in an environment where excellence in artistic practice and intellectual honesty are realized, in keeping with the school’s mission.

This commitment does not mean that faculty may say or write whatever they wish, wherever they wish. Juilliard may restrict expression that violates the law, that defames others, that constitutes a genuine threat or harassment, that unjustifiably invades privacy or confidentiality interests, or that otherwise results in the creation of a hostile environment. In addition, Juilliard may restrict expression that is incompatible with the functioning of the school and may reasonably regulate the time, place, and manner of expression to ensure that it does not disrupt the ordinary activities of the school.

While Juilliard faculty retain their right to free expression both on and off campus, exercise of this right in light of their association with The Juilliard School comes with considerable responsibility. As scholars and working artists, many of whom are often in the public eye, faculty are expected to acknowledge clearly that their opinions and convictions are personal and not institutional. Faculty are also expected, per Juilliard’s Standards of Ethical Conduct, to refrain from activities that conflict with the best interests of the school and avoid conduct that could compromise the integrity or reputation of the school.

As an international institution, The Juilliard School is committed to understanding and respecting the traditions and laws of various societies; however, the free speech norms of the United States are always the foundation upon which our decisions are made.

Decisions regarding limits to academic and artistic freedom will be made by the Office of the Provost with input from faculty.

The Tianjin Juilliard School in Tianjin will abide by and uphold this Statement on Academic and Artistic Freedom, understanding that we also need to be cognizant of local laws related to our venue, when appropriate.

This policy is subject to periodic institutional review.

About Tianjin Juilliard Public Safety

The Tianjin Juilliard School ("School") Public Safety Office is responsible for public safety of the School. The mission of the Public Safety Office is to ensure the security of visitors to the School, and to create a safe environment in which Tianjin Juilliard students, faculty, and staff can pursue their educational and professional goals while in the School.

In case of emergencies, the School has a mass notification system designed to alert the School community in a matter of minutes via email or other social communication tools. Senior members of the School’s leadership team are available at all hours to ensure the immediate response to reported incidents.

The Public Safety Office also maintains strong partnerships with YuJiaPu  Police Station, the Tianjin Municiple Public Security Bureau, as well as embassies and consulates.

Safety in Tianjin

Tianjin has a low crime rate, particularly for a major city, but petty crimes like pickpocketing do happen in crowded areas like train stations, markets, and busy streets.

Emergency Protocol

Fire Safety

It is the policy of School the when smoke or fire is discovered, fire alarm must be sounded. The fire alarm will be the sounding of a coded signal and broadcast in several rounds. There is not a different signal to indicate if an alarm bell is a drill or an actual fire emergency.

If you discover or suspect a fire:

Press the nearest fire alarm button!

Call Public Safety Office at (022) 66336498

Upon hearing the alarm, students, faculty members, staff and visitors must exit the School building using the nearest exit. Follow the evacuation chart posted in every room and the exit signage in corridors.

  • NEVER use an elevator for evacuation.
  • Close all doors and windows to prevent the spread of fire and smoke.
  • Keep low to the floor to avoid smoke and toxic gases.
  • Once in the stairway, proceed down/up to the groundfloor and exit the building. Move away from the building and gather at the assembly point, out of the way of firefighters and other emergency personnel.
  • Do not attempt or allow student or personnel to re-enter the building for any reason, until you are authorized to do so.
  • If you are a person requiring assistance, contact Public Safety Office or call 119 for assistance.

No Smoking

  • The School is a smoke-free environment. Smoking is not permitted on School property.

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

It’s easy to remember how to use a fire extinguisher if you can remember the acronym PASS, which stands for PULL, AIM, SQUEEZE and SWEEP.

  • Pull the Pin, this will allow you to discharge the extinguisher.
  • Aim at the base of the fire, if you aim at the flames (which is frequently the temptation), the extinguisher agent will fly right through and do no good.
  • Squeeze the top handle or lever, this depresses a button that releases the pressurized extinguishing agent in the extinguisher.
  • Sweep from side to side, until the fire is completely out. Start using the extinguisher from a safe distance away, then move forward. Once the fire is out, keep an eye on the area in case it reignites.

Earthquake Safety

During the earthquake please follows the instruction as followed:

If you are indoors:

1.Drop, cover, and hold—take cover beside a sturdy desk, table, or bench or against an inside wall and hold on. If there is no desk or table near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building.

2.Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, such as lighting fixtures and furniture.

3.If you are in bed when the earthquake strikes, stay there. Hold on and protect your head with a pillow, unless you are under a heavy light fixture that could fall. In that case, move to the nearest safe place.

4.Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Most injuries during earthquakes occur when people are hit by falling objects while entering or leaving buildings.

5.Be aware that electricity may go out or that sprinkler systems or fire alarms may turn on.

6.Do not use elevators.

If you are outdoors:

1. Stay at an open ground area.

2. Move away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and utility wires.

Call Public Safety Office at (022) 66336498

Emergency Medical Support

The Public Safety Office also assists the relevant student management department in calling for an ambulance during emergency medical situations.

Students can call the Public Safety Office any time or come to the office to ask for help.

Lockdown procedure

When violent intruders happen, if exiting the buildings is not possible for safety reasons, take refuge, preferably in a room that can be locked, follow procedure as below.

  • Any person finding an armed intruder or any other immediate danger will immediately inform the Public Safety Office and help in giving the Lockdown signal in all areas of the School where there are students and staff.
  • On hearing the signal, teachers will check the corridor for passing students then close and lock their classroom doors and direct students to take cover on the floor, preferably under desks or anything providing cover. Try to keep the students out of sight, and keep them quiet. Teachers will not search for missing students.
  • Upon securing the classroom, teachers will also remain on the floor until further instructions are received.
  • The Public Safety Office will summon assistance. When the danger has passed, the Public Safety Office will issue further instructions by word of mouth. Teachers should be prepared to evacuate their students to the outside assembly point, as directed.
