Tianjin Juilliard's landmark campus and Juilliard Imagination public opening
I am happy to announce the 2023-24 Season of more than 100 music performances and educational events by faculty and students as well as guest artists at Tianjin Juilliard and further afield. As the only global branch campus of The Juilliard School, Tianjin Juilliard builds on Juilliard's rich history developing the next generation of artists. The planning of the performance season at Tianjin Juilliard focuses on the value of learning for the students and the educational experience for the audiences. Through high caliber performances, productions and community outreach programs, Tianjin Juilliard continues to serve as a catalyst shaping the arts in the region and beyond.
We look forward to welcoming the public to visit our beautiful campus and enjoy our concerts. We will continue to engage our community-at-large through outreach events, festivals and outdoors concerts.

Tianjin Juilliard Orchestra
Wei He: "Our resident conductor and director of orchestral studies, Ken Lam, works closely with studio faculty to address the needs of the students, and to develop their orchestral playing skills. Many of our studio faculty have extensive performance backgrounds with major international ensembles and orchestras. By involving studio faculty in the planning and programming of the orchestra season, we have successfully developed an orchestral culture at Tianjin Juilliard since the school's establishment."
We have an exciting season ahead with repertoire ranging from such 'warhorses' as Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 "Eroica", Symphonie fantastique by Berlioz, and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, to works by Bernstein, Tomasi, Messiaen and Lutosławski. Joining the Tianjin Juilliard Orchestra as guest artists are acclaimed cellist Jian Wang (Elgar Cello Concerto in E Minor), erhu virtuoso Xianghua Ma (Qigang Chen's Reflet d'un temps disparu) and guest conductor Shao-Chia Lü. I am thrilled to welcome a new class of Instrumental and Orchestral Studies majors to Tianjin Juilliard Orchestra and look forward to working with them and continuing the growth of our orchestra and program.

Tianjin Juilliard Ensemble
Wei He: "The side-by-side performance practice is at the heart of the collaborative training at Tianjin Juilliard. Students actively participate in the creative process of communicating and decision making with faculty. They are expected to lead, to question, and sometimes to challenge the musical ideas of their teachers."
As the flagship faculty ensemble of the School, the Tianjin Juilliard Ensemble (TJE) kicked off its inaugural season in 2019 with performance tours in China and Asia in addition to regular concert series in Tianjin.
Many TJE concerts this year will showcase graduate students joining their teachers in various chamber music ensembles. Other highlights of TJE season this year include a Chou Wen-chung Centennial Commemorative Concert at the Xinghai Conservatory of Music in November. Tianjin Juilliard Ensemble brings back the QingXin Ensemble in a unique collaboration featuring Vivaldi's Four Seasons and Piazzolla's The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires. Members of TJE will also travel to New York to perform in a joint recital with Juilliard faculty celebrating the Chinese New Year in February 2024.

Festival Connect
Wei He: "The annual Festival Connect continues to explore tradition and innovation through chamber music and orchestral performances by students and faculty as well as guest artists. It reflects Tianjin Juilliard's vision of bridging cultures through music."
This year's Festival Connect will feature chamber music and orchestral works by master French composer, Olivier Messiaen as well as two celebrated composers of our time who studied with Messiaen: William Bolcom and Qigang Chen. French soprano Norah Amsellem will join the Tianjin Juilliard Ensemble at the opening concert of Festival Connect, while erhu virtuoso Xianghua Ma will join the Tianjin Juilliard Orchestra in the closing concert.

One School, Two Campuses
Juilliard New York has been a pillar of standard that we have relied on to keep us aligned with the core Juilliard values, while also striving to pursue innovation in musical arts. At Tianjin Juilliard, when we continue to look to Juilliard as the beacon of excellence and bastion of tradition, we are reminded of our responsibility to impart these core values onto the next generation. We look forward to seeing that transcend across the global stage this upcoming performance season with visiting faculty from New York and other guest artists.
Katherine Chu
This year, visiting faculty from Juilliard New York, Charles Neidich (clarinet), Elaine Douvas (oboe), and William Short (bassoon) will be giving performances, masterclasses and workshops at Tianjin Juilliard. Tianjin Juilliard faculty will also appear alongside their colleagues in New York, in keeping with the spirit of 'One School, Two Campuses.'

Season highlights include performance tours and residencies in both China and The United States. The Quartet will also give the Chinese premiere of John Adams' Absolute Jest - Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. QingXin Ensemble
Wei He: "Founded in 2021, under the guidance of Tianjin Juilliard, the QingXin Ensemble (QXE) is primarily comprised of outstanding alumni from both Tianjin and New York Juilliard campuses. In two years, QXE has become a new force in Tianjin Juilliard’s performance activities and community outreach events. We have been constantly inspired by these young artists’ dedication to music and their adventurous spirit. In the upcoming season, QXE will be deeply involved in institutional artistic activities, and contribute to Tianjin Juilliard’s public education programs."
This upcoming season, QXE will make its first appearance at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing, collaborating with musicians from the NCPA orchestra and conductor Jiajing Lai.

Pre-College
An integral part of the selective programs at The Tianjin Juilliard School, Pre-College welcomed its first cohort of students in the fall of 2019, offering a comprehensive conservatory-style music program, on Saturdays from September to May, to advanced students ages 8 to 18 who exhibit the talent, potential, and ambition to pursue serious music study at the college level.
The Pre-College typically hosts two annual ensemble concerts (including Wind Ensemble, High School Strings Ensemble, and Youth Strings Ensemble, and Choruses). Throughout the semester, there will also be various studio recitals and student recitals. On any given Saturday, there will be Works in Progress concerts aimed to provide a platform for students to test out the pieces they are working on; and Student Artist Series concerts where students present their polished performances. The Chamber Music Intensive program typically hosts a concert at the end of the year, while chamber music concerts for all other students take place towards the end of each semester. The academic year is also interspersed with various guest master classes. To kick off this year, Pre-College will present an outdoor concert on the West Plaza stage for the Tianjin public audiences.

Public and Continuing Education
As part of Tianjin Juilliard’s mission to make quality music education accessible to all people, Public Education acts as a bridge connecting Tianjin Juilliard's music education to the public in China. In the fall 2023 semester, Public Education launches its Sundays at TJS program which provides local students with high quality lessons with instrumental, choral, and music literacy classes. Students ages 6-10 across China and beyond connect with Tianjin Juilliard through its online course Music Discovery, with an expanded curriculum covering music theory, literacy, and history.
Continuing Education offers valuable training opportunities for professional music performers and teachers. The program will feature various workshops during fall semester, including the Vocal Institute for professional singers and Building Core Competencies for public school music teachers.
