About the Program

Tianjin Juilliard offers a unique program of study dedicated to preparing musicians for careers playing in professional chamber music ensembles. The major is open to violin, viola, cello, and piano performers leading to a Master of Music degree in chamber music. This program aims to create a foundation for individuals and existing chamber ensembles who are ready to establish themselves professionally. All chamber music groups receive coachings from our international faculty-in-residence, Juilliard New York visiting faculty members, and other visiting artist-teachers, and every chamber music program group will give several public performances. An important aspect of the program is apprenticeship, under which students, faculty, and visiting faculty rehearse and perform together creating an atmosphere reminiscent of an elite chamber music festival. Students also continue honing their solo playing skills through weekly lessons with major instrumental faculty. As a student, you will

  • explore the nature of collaboration through the deep study of great chamber repertoire
  • work and perform alongside faculty and guest artists in chamber music ensembles
  • learn about the development of chamber music genres and chamber music repertoire

Performance Opportunities

The proliferation of new concert venues in China has created a high demand for skilled performers. To that end, chamber music majors at the school have the opportunity to perform in major halls throughout China. The school, together with its extensive network, prepare students to pursue performing and teaching opportunities, as well as connect chamber music groups with presenters who can help launch their careers.

Tianjin Juilliard Chamber Music Fellowship Program

Pre-formed string quartets and piano trios applying to the Chamber Music program will be considered for the Tianjin Juilliard Chamber Music Fellowship Program. This graduate-level program brings a qualified string quartet and piano trio to Tianjin Juilliard, where they will pursue the two-year Master of Music degree in chamber music under the mentorship of the Tianjin Juilliard Resident Faculty, including members of the Shanghai Quartet and Visiting Faculty, including the Juilliard String Quartet.

Each member of the Tianjin Juilliard fellowship ensemble will receive the full-tuition fellowship, as well as on-campus housing, and a 15,000 RMB professional development stipend. The fellowship string quartet will also be given the opportunity to participate in the annual Juilliard String Quartet Seminar in New York. The prestigious fellowship will nurture the development of chamber music ensembles at a critical point in their educational, musical, and professional development, allowing them to focus on their study and craft with financial and professional support.

The fellowship ensembles will experience significantly enhanced programmatic opportunities, including performances throughout China and overseas, teaching and coaching experience, and community engagement. Besides a profound cultural and historical heritage, China offers exciting performance opportunities for emerging chamber ensembles. The ensemble will be visible ambassadors for Tianjin Juilliard and will have opportunities to perform at major performance venues and festivals throughout China, as well as in New York.
