CLASSICAL VOICE PROGRAM

The Pre-College voice program provides a solid foundation in technique, artistic expression, and interpretation with a focus on healthy singing, and prepares young singers for advanced study, should they choose to pursue vocal arts at a collegiate level. The comprehensive curriculum is designed to nurture young singers into true vocal artists, and includes a voice lesson with Yinpei Han; a 30-minute coaching with a vocal coach to hone style and diction; a diction class; and a vocal performance class. Diction class covers the fundamentals of lyric diction, starting with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The vocal performance class covers a variety of topics relevant to a singer’s development, such as body movement, acting, and the history of opera and singing. It also serves as a studio class where students can sing for each other and in small ensembles. Singers have many performance opportunities and master classes with guest artists and teachers from Juilliard in New York and Tianjin Juilliard. In addition, voice majors take classes in ear training, music theory, English for Musical Purposes, and participate in the Pre-College Chorus, all of which are part of the core curriculum for all Pre-College students.

CLASSICAL GUITAR PROGRAM

Classical guitar majors at Tianjin Juilliard Pre-College experience a full day of music courses designed to refine their technical playing, develop their collaborative music making skills, and shape their unique musical voice. The guitar curriculum includes a 60-minute lesson with Junhong Kuang, whose comprehensive pedagogical approach incorporates an exploration of guitar history and literature; guitar studio class where students perform for each other; participation in guitar ensemble focusing on arrangements for 4 or more players; and a chamber music group where they partner with other instruments or singers. In addition, guitar majors take classes in ear training, music theory, English for Musical Purposes, and participate in the Pre-College Chorus, all of which are part of the core curriculum for all Pre-College students.
