The Tianjin Juilliard School is an educational institution offering a graduate program for a Master of Music degree from Juilliard in instrumental and orchestral studies, instrumental and chamber music, or collaborative piano; a Saturday pre-college program for talented students ages 8-18; continuing education programs for professionals and adult learners; public education programs for music learners of all ages; and public performances. It is the first performing arts institution in China to offer a U.S.-accredited Master of Music degree.
The school is authorized by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, the Tianjin Municipal Government (the Tianjin Conservatory of Music Juilliard Graduate School is the China-foreign joint institution of The Tianjin Juilliard School’s graduate degree programs) and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (USA).
Juilliard is developing the school in partnership with The Tianjin Conservatory of Music, Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area Administrative Commission, and the Tianjin Innovative Finance Investment Company (T.I.F.I.). The 350,000 square-foot building is designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the same firm responsible for the 2009 expansion of Juilliard’s iconic New York home. The Tianjin Juilliard School is a center for performance, practice, research, and interactive exhibitions, with communal spaces that are designed to welcome the public into the creative process and performance of music.
The Tianjin Conservatory of Music
The Tianjin Conservatory of Music (TJCM) was founded in 1958. Its predecessor, the Central Conservatory of Music was founded in Tianjin in 1950. In July 1959, the Central Conservatory of Music moved to Beijing and TJCM was officially established. Miu Tianrui, a famous music educator and theorist, was the inaugural president of TJCM. As one of China’s earliest conservatories to grant master’s and bachelor’s degrees, TJCM has significant influence in China’s music education. Through the years, TJCM has nurtured more than ten thousand talents in composing, acting, theory and arts management, and has made a great contribution to the prosperity of China’s arts and culture. TJCM has an excellent faculty — consisting of many renowned musicians and scholars—and abundant academic resources in music, dance, drama, film, video, and artistic theory. As a visionary conservatory, TJCM is a partner of The Juilliard School to promote academic cooperation and the establishment of The Tianjin Juilliard School.
Professor Xu Changjun serves as the President of the Tianjin Conservatory of Music and a doctoral advisor at the Central Conservatory of Music.
